Some distances shouldn’t be this hard.
A marathon has a route. A distance. A finish line.
But for people living with cancer, some of the hardest distances have nothing to do with kilometres.
The distance between a patient and a monitoring test they need.
The distance between a family and the hospital where treatment takes place.
The distance between a child and the education they deserve, when cancer puts the family’s finances under pressure.
These are the distances Friends of Max works to help patients and families navigate.
And this is why on 17 January 2027, Viji Venkatesh, Managing Trustee, Friends of Max, will be walking at the Tata Mumbai Marathon to raise funds for Friends of Max.
Viji has spent nearly four decades working in cancer care and more than two decades building and supporting the FOM community.
She knows that living with cancer can involve challenges beyond treatment itself. Patients and families may also face the costs of essential monitoring tests, travel and accommodation for treatment, and children’s education.
These are practical burdens that can affect a family’s ability to manage its life alongside cancer. Through its patient-centric initiatives, Friends of Max works to support people living with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) and Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumours (GIST), as well as their caregivers.
Viji is walking to help FOM continue this work. We invite you to join her by supporting her fundraising appeal.
