Max’s Life, His Legacy and the Hope He Gave Us
By Aditya Sharma, Caregiver and FOM City Chapter Leader

“For me, Max’s story is much more than the story of a young life lost to CML. It is the story of how one life, even after it has ended, can continue to give hope, strength, and a new beginning to thousands of others.
My father has been living with CML for the past 34 years, and I was born after his diagnosis. Growing up, I witnessed my family’s journey with this disease, even before I fully understood what it meant. Coming from a middle-class family where my father was the sole earning member, the financial burden of lifelong treatment was something we could never have managed on our own. The medicines were expensive, and the uncertainty surrounding the disease was emotionally overwhelming for the entire family.
In those circumstances, The Max Foundation became much more than an organisation for us. It became a lifeline, a source of hope, and a reason for our family to keep moving forward. The access to medicines gave my father the opportunity to continue his treatment and live his life, while the emotional support gave our family the strength to face the journey together. Without this support, I often wonder how different our lives might have been.
What makes Max’s legacy so extraordinary is that his life and the challenges he faced with CML became the beginning of something that would change the lives of so many people around the world. His parents transformed their personal loss into a mission of compassion, ensuring that other families would not have to face the same journey alone and that no patient should be denied the chance to live because of a lack of access to treatment.
As someone who has experienced this journey closely, I understand that access to medicine is only one part of the battle. A diagnosis affects an entire family. It brings fear, uncertainty, unanswered questions, and moments when hope can feel distant. In such times, knowing that someone understands your struggle, stands beside you, and is willing to help makes an immeasurable difference. For my family, and for so many others, the support of The Max Foundation has meant exactly that.
I have lived through years of accompanying my father to hospital visits every three months, sometimes without fully understanding why these visits were necessary or what the future held. Today, I stand beside him as his caregiver, continuing those regular check-ups with a very different understanding of the journey we have travelled. What once felt like a path filled with uncertainty has also become a journey of resilience, gratitude, and hope. Being able to see my father continue his life is something I will never take for granted.
Today, as an active volunteer and City Chapter Leader with Friends of Max, I feel immensely proud to give back to an organisation that has given my family so much. Every opportunity to support another patient or caregiver reminds me why this work matters. Behind every patient is a family, behind every treatment is a story, and behind every act of support is the possibility of helping someone hold on to hope.
One of the most beautiful things about Friends of Max is the closeness of its community. It is a place where people do not have to explain every fear or struggle because others have lived through similar experiences. There is an understanding, a warmth, and a willingness to stand by one another that is difficult to put into words. Whether it is sharing experiences, offering reassurance, helping someone navigate treatment, or simply being present when a family needs someone to talk to, this community reminds us that we are never alone in this journey.
On Max’s Day, I believe we celebrate not only Max’s life, but also everything his life continues to make possible. We celebrate the families who have found strength, the patients who have gained access to treatment, the caregivers who have found support, and the countless people who continue to live with hope because of the mission his parents began.
Max may not be here with us today, but his legacy lives on in every patient who receives treatment, every family that finds reassurance, every caregiver who feels understood, and every life that is given another chance.
For my family, Max’s story is deeply personal. His legacy has touched my father’s life, shaped my own understanding of compassion, and inspired me to serve others who are walking a similar path.
I will always be grateful that, in the midst of a difficult journey, our family found an organisation that stood beside us. And I feel privileged that today I can help extend that same support to others.
Max’s life may have been cut short, but the hope born from his story continues to grow. And as long as that hope reaches another patient, strengthens another family, or brings a smile to someone facing CML, his legacy will continue to live on.”
