“Advances in treatment such as the availability of 2nd generation (and beyond) TKIs, has improved overall survival of patients with CML, over and above the magic of Imatinib. This has transformed the care of CML patients compared to what it was three decades ago. As patients live longer lives, support groups provide a sense of belonging and serve as a platform to share and discuss their concerns which may not be addressed in the Medical Clinic. Groups such as Friends of Max have supported CML patients tremendously over the last two decades touching their lives in unimaginable ways. Access to information is vital for patients to understand their disease and treatment better. With the advent of social media and easier access to information the awareness of patients and their families has truly improved over the decades, which will hopefully translate to better compliance and outcome.”
