A Support Group Meeting was held on Saturday, 7 December 2024 for CML and GIST patients in Mangalore. Francis D Souza, FOM Attending City Chapter Leader was interviewed to share his experience. Here is what he had to say:
1. How do these gatherings impact individuals, and what emotions surface when connecting with the FOM Community?
These gatherings and meetings have a significant impact on each individual in different ways. Many patients have doubts and questions, which are addressed through answers provided by the panel of doctors. Some patients may face challenges but find it difficult to express or share their concerns. However, by listening to the discussions during these meetings, they feel reassured and comforted knowing the others share similar doubts and experiences.
2. Now it has been 20 years since we have been doing patient support group meetings, how do you think the meetings have evolved, what are the new changes in the discussions and workshops that you are seeing?
FOM has been doing a wonderful job over the past 20 years with these meetings, sessions, including virtual meetings conducted during the pandemic and other programs. They have truly helped boost our spirits, strengthen our positive approach towards our illness, and support our personal growth in life. A heartfelt thankyou to all of you!
3. What would you like to see in future meetings?
FOM’s is truly meaningful, and we are grateful for witnessing the love and dedication that goes into everything we do. We feel proud and blessed to be part of this journey. We have full trust and confidence that as the years pass, your sessions and meetings will continue to improve, with even more exciting and engaging elements introduced in future programs.
4. In your experience with Support Group meetings, can you share a specific instance where you witnessed a notable impact or positive outcome for a patient?
I would like to share a moment from the meeting that I feel is important to highlight. There was a young boy named Ali from Bhatkal, a patient just passed his PUC (Pre University Certificate) and was preparing for the NEET exam, aspiring to become a doctor. Initially he was very nervous and shy, who did not want to face the crowd. However, we encouraged and motivated him to believe in his potential. After the workshop session “Share a Story”, he gave a presentation so confidently that the entire audience applauded. His heartfelt words about his dreams and aspirations made us all happy. God bless him as he pursues his dreams!
