Vishvanathan Nagaraj, Friends of Max City Chapter Leader from Tamil Nadu, is our Patient Advocate for December 2024.
From Humble Beginnings to a life of Purpose
Vishvanathan was born in a small village in Karur district, Tamil Nadu, to parents who earned their living as daily wage earners; his early life was modest, yet filled with play and decent academic performance. His father’s words stuck with him: “Education is the key to a better life.”
Taking these words to heart, Vishvanathan set out to break barriers. He became the first in his family to graduate, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and later an MBA, all while juggling work.
A chance conversation with Beena introduced him to The Max Foundation and Friends of Max. According to Vishvanathan, “This simple conversation changed my life, introducing me to a community that would go on to become my support system.”
Today, Vishvanathan is an active volunteer and a central and integral part of FOM (Tamil Nadu) City Chapter Leader group. Always ready to lend a hand, he actively participates in regional Support Group Meetings, shares his knowledge and experience with patients and caregivers and makes financial contributions to Chai for Cancer to support patients in need. He also plays an active role in helping FOM facilitate BCR ABL testing for patients in and around Chennai. His unwavering dedication and warm personality have established him as one of the most sought out and inspiring patient leaders.
He fondly recalls a turning point in 2015-16, when he was at a career crossroads. It was then that Viji’s (Amma) guidance led him to spend a week in Mumbai with The Max Foundation team. Those conversations with Viji and his time spent at the Max office remain etched in his memory.
Beyond FOM, Vishvanathan volunteers with an educational NGO, paying forward the sacrifices his parents made to give him a better life. He is happily married, living a fulfilling life with his loving partner.
