Mini John

Meet Mini John, Friends of Max (FOM) City Chapter Leader from Mumbai, and FOM’s Patient Advocate for August 2025.

A Pillar of Strength – Mini’s Journey as a Caregiver and a true Chai for Cancer Crusader

Born in Kerala and raised in Kalyan, Mini’s early years were filled with cherished childhood memories spent with her ammachi (maternal grandmother), listening to her soulful songs and captivating stories. She began her schooling at Holy Cross Convent School and went on to complete her higher secondary education at Birla College.

Her interest in nursing took root early — inspired by her mother’s sister, a dedicated nurse whose compassion and care left a deep impression on her. Determined to follow in those footsteps, Mini pursued her Diploma in Nursing from KEM Hospital, Parel, and later completed an MBA in Healthcare. With over 32 years of professional experience — 15 years in clinical care and 15 in administrative roles — Mini combined skill with a deep sense of empathy in every aspect of her work.

In 2003, life changed course when her husband, Pramod, was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML). Drawing on her nursing background and natural compassion, Mini stepped into the role of caregiver with unwavering commitment. She became closely involved with Friends of Max (FOM), bringing not just her professional expertise but also her ability to truly listen and understand what patients go through — both physically and emotionally.

Every year, the Johns’ Chai for Cancer Adda is an unbroken tradition! Hosted by Pramod, Mini and their children David and Riya, it has become almost set in stone – no Chai for Cancer season feels complete without one! Often, the Adda is dedicated to Pramod’s birthday, turning the celebration into a heartfelt contribution to the cause.

Their extended family joins in, welcoming Pramod’s colleagues from the newspaper world, friends, parishioners from his church, neighbours, and even their children’s friends – all gathering to raise a cup in support.

What makes the Johns’ Addas truly special is the endless stream of hot chai, personally brewed and served with warmth and grace by the ever-smiling Mini and their son David. The atmosphere overflows with love, generosity, and camaraderie, making each Adda an unforgettable part of the Chai for Cancer story. All contributions thus raised help FOM raise awareness and funds to support our patients from economically weaker sections of society — helping cover diagnostic and travel costs, supporting a child’s education, and meeting other essential needs that often go unmet but make a significant difference in their daily lives.

“Our strong faith in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ has strengthened us every single day,” Mini shares. “It has helped us move forward, not just for ourselves, but to be a blessing to others too.” Their journey has been supported by family — parents, children, friends, church members, and elders — with their daughter in particular playing a big role, as son David was very young at the time.

Naturally introverted, Mini found herself changed through Pramod’s outgoing and community-minded spirit. “He’s always been social, involved in everything — from church activities to school, college, and community events. I’ve tried my best to be his pillar of support, just as our children have.”

The road hasn’t been without its challenges, but Mini’s advice to other CML patients is clear:

“There will be tough times, but we must keep going. Challenges can be stepping stones. Support one another in need.”
