Dr. Pravakar Sahu, Friends of Max City Chapter Leader from Bhubaneswar, Odisha, is our Patient Advocate for September 2024.

Together Building a Supportive Community
Born in 1961, into a modest-middle-class family in a village in Odisha, Dr. Pravakar Sahu’s journey began as the youngest of five siblings. After completing his MBBS at MKCG Medical College in Berhampur, Odisha, he pursued a postgraduate diploma in Public Health Management from IIPH Bhubaneswar.
In November 2004, his life took an unexpected turn when his wife, Madhusmita Sahu, was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML). Their journey for treatment led them to Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai in December 2004, where they met a patient from Nepal holding a Glivec strip. His story opened doors for them, introducing them to The Max Foundation and the possibility of receiving Glivec at no cost through their GIPAP program.
He vividly remembers writing to Mrs. Viji Venkatesh to enrol his wife in this program. Her prompt reply, filled with warmth and support, marked the beginning of a life-changing relationship for both him and Madhusmita. “The love that we received from Viji (whom we affectionately call Amma) and the Friends of Max during our most challenging days has been a source of immense strength, and we remain forever grateful,” he shares.

Since then, he has been an active FOM City Chapter Leader, who participates in all FOM led patient activities. He attends Patient Support Group Meetings across various cities, including their home in Bhubaneswar. Driven by a passion for community, he is dedicated to helping other patients and their families navigate their journeys, offering guidance on the valuable resources available through Friends of Max. Advocacy for timely tests and adherence to treatment plans is close to his heart, as he believes these are crucial steps in effectively managing CML.
In addition to his work with Friends of Max, he and his family are involved with the Brija Gopika Seva Mission (BGSM), guided by Jagatguru Krupalji Maharaj. Last Sunday of every month, they attend health camps, offering healthcare to all who come.
Today, he and Madhusmita are proud parents to two grown up daughters, who are married and stay in Bangalore with their families. The younger one has completed her MCA, while the elder is a BTech engineer, both excelling in their respective fields.
His advice to CML patients:
