GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY - A PEOPLE'S MOVEMENT It all began in the Max Foundation office in Edmonds in 2002.I was telling Pat about how the number of people I was working with in India was growing. There were now so many individuals having to face the trauma of a diagnosis of cancer in their families and being enrolled into GIPAP. They were talking to me, their families opening up and wanting to know so much and more. Whenever and wherever possible we had begun to meet with each other; in open gardens and on the sea front or in street cafes in whichever city work would take me to. Budget and work constraints would make me realize soon that it was not possible for me to keep traveling. There was place in our hearts but not in my little work place in Mumbai.

In the midst of champions
I was fresh out of college and had no goals in mind for the future yet. I did try to apply for a job as cabin crew with a few airlines but didn't make it through on medical grounds. So, on the look out for a job / any job while I was waiting for the job of my dreams I learnt from a family friend that there was a vacancy in a Leukaemia Foundation for an assistant and I jumped at the opportunity to be employed for the time until I found something that I really wanted to do.

A year of learning and sharing Its already a year now since I joined The Max Foundation and I can feel the presence of Max right beside us and with us all the time.
It was through an acquaintance of mine that I got in touch with Viji Ma'am (Yes Viji Ma'am it was then and not my Amma as she is now). Well, I met her and some how managed to impress her. Gradually I started working with the Max India team, at first without a very clear idea of the work but soon I had the basic knowledge and a back ground as to what was expected of me. |

The Joy of Giving Life Through Gipap
My mobile phone rang yet once again on a really hectic workday. It was past seven in the evening and I had just shut down my laptop after processing some fifteen new applications requesting for Glivec at no cost under Novartis' GIPAP Programme. I picked up the mobile to hear a tiny little girl's voice lisping in rustic accented Telugu… “Thank You Beena Aunty…!” While still recovering from my surprise, I heard a man's voice take over, “Madam, this is S. The voice you heard just now was of my 3 year old daughter M. She has CML Madam. And just today we got the first supply of free medicine (Glivec) that you arranged to get for us. I told M that you have saved her life and she wanted to thank you, Madam. As I placed the phone down, my eyes were filled, but my heart soaring. Such is the awesome satisfaction in working as part of the Novartis-The Max Foundation GIPAP programme.

A New Journey With A New Family I vividly remember the date 15th January 2008. It was the day I stepped into the Max Foundation office in Worli .It was the first time I met Viji, Ayeshah, Sharon, Ashok B and Ashok Z Luckily I also got to meet Beena too very soon as she came to Bombay for a conference. It is strange for when I look back, I do not feel as if I know them only from the recent ten months. I feel I have known them since ages. The moment I entered the office, I knew what I wanted to do. I asked Viji whether I could volunteer four days a week. Viji gladly accepted my offer and I started coming to Max Foundation from the next day itself.

My New Beginning Memory takes me back to January 26, 2008 when I’d attended my first All India Friends of Max meeting in Bangalore. I was amazed at the number of people who’d come together to share and learn. I had an idea of what to expect, but was moved beyond words as I sat and listened. I thought of what I was told, about The Max Foundation, the Friends of Max and above all Amma, Ayeshah, Beena, Sharon & Ashok. I wondered what it would be like to be able to, actively, participate in this journey of a person’s life from fear or despair to hope and a new beginning.

A Life Full of Happiness I was a B.com graduate, looking out for a job. One day I got a call from a Consultancy about a job opening at an NGO, so I came for the interview and fortunately got the opportunity to join The Max Foundation. I didn’t have a very good impression of NGO’s in my mind, but after I got to know how Max Foundation works and how it helps those diagnosed with cancer and other blood disorders, I was very excited to work with them.

FOLLOWING HEART
I am the recent addition to The Max Foundation family. Definitely would say the beginning has been great and am very positive that it would be the same later as well. I came to know about TMF through an acquaintance of mine. Listening from her about TMF and after that meeting with Amma, who told me more about the organization I got a hunch that yes this might be the place or kind of work I am looking for and to contribute towards. My area of interest is associated with people and community and this was what got me here.
